LEGOLAND California Review: Best Ages, Hotel Tips, and What to Expect
We recently took our family to LEGOLAND California Resort over the New Year’s holiday, and I walked away with a lot of thoughts — the good, the slightly chaotic, and the “this is actually perfect for this age” realizations.
If you’re considering LEGOLAND for your family, especially with younger kids, here’s the real scoop from a mom traveling with a 3- and 5-year-old.
Who LEGOLAND California Is Really Best For
Let’s start here, because this matters.
Unless your child is absolutely gaga for LEGO, I’d say LEGOLAND is best suited for kids ages 2–10ish. That’s where this park truly shines.
There are:
- Tons of rides for littles
- A dedicated DUPLO play area for the youngest guests
- Multiple playground-style zones (with and without LEGO bricks)
This is a park where kids don’t need to be tall, fearless, or endlessly patient to have a great time — and as a parent, that’s refreshing.
Where We Stayed: LEGOLAND California Hotel (2 Nights)
We stayed two nights at the LEGOLAND Hotel, arriving around 2pm since it was only about an hour drive for us — and bonus points, our room was already ready.
First Impressions (Honest Version)
We’re avid Disney visitors, so one thing we noticed right away was the lack of visible staff. Bellhops barely glanced our way, the self-check-in kiosk didn’t work for us, and there was only one cast member handling the line.
It wasn’t a dealbreaker — just different.
Also… the lobby initially had what I can only describe as eau de child. 😅
Thankfully, when we returned later, it smelled much better (I’m guessing air freshener kicked in).
The Room: A Huge Win for Families
We booked an Adventure-themed room, and honestly? The setup was fantastic.
Here’s what worked so well:
- A bunk bed with trundle tucked into its own alcove
- LEGO sets already waiting in the room
- A queen bed, desk, and a decent-sized fridge
- A lower toilet and a step stool for kids (why doesn’t every hotel do this??)
It felt like the room was actually designed by someone with kids — not just themed for them.
Hotel Perks Parents Will Appreciate
✔️ Free breakfast buffet included
The food wasn’t amazing, but it was absolutely worth it for convenience alone.
One thing to note: there are no servers. If you want a specialty coffee or anything beyond juice, milk, soda, or drip coffee, you’ll need to head to the bar across the lobby.
✔️ Epic lobby play space
There’s a huge pirate ship, LEGO pits, and a DUPLO area with seating for parents. Very cute. Very tempting to just… let them play forever.
✔️ The elevator = main attraction
Once the doors close, lights hit a disco ball, music blasts, and suddenly your elevator ride is a dance party. I counted at least 8 rotating songs, including Car Wash — which my kids were thrilled about.
Pro tip: If your room is on the first floor, expect some elevator joyriding from enthusiastic kids.
✔️ Nightly dance party (6:30–9pm)
Perfect for getting the wiggles out before bedtime.
✔️ Sundries via vending machine
In line with the limited staff presence, essentials are available through a large vending machine on the first floor.
The Park: What to Know Before You Go
Weather Matters — A Lot
If you can avoid going in the rain… do it.
We happened to visit during one of the heaviest Southern California storms in years, and many rides shut down because the tracks become slippery. That left fewer rides open and much longer lines.
Normally, though? LEGOLAND lines are great.
- Typical waits range from 5–60 minutes
- 15 minutes felt like the average
- Perfect for short attention spans
Don’t Skip the DUPLO Area
The DUPLO section is basically a giant playground — and my son could not get enough of the little choo-choo train inside it.
If you’re traveling with toddlers or preschoolers, this area alone is worth building time into your day.
Food Reality Check 🍜
I’ll be honest: I packed for this trip very differently than I would for Disney.
No snacks. Just water bottles… and a prayer.
Big mistake.
Food prices inside the park rival Disney prices. We had a wonderful lunch at a ramen spot, but $17 for a kids’ meal definitely caught my attention.
The silver lining?
- Some locations serve beer and wine
- Hard cider was available (which, in my opinion, is a necessity when spending all day at a park with little kids)
Park Hours & Pace
During our winter visit:
- Park opened at 10am (or 9:15am for hotel guests)
- Closed between 6–7pm
In summer, hours typically extend later.
Shorter hours actually worked well for us — no overstimulation, no late-night meltdowns, and plenty of time to rest back at the hotel.
Favorite Ride: The Submarine 🚢🐠
The clear winner for our family was the submarine ride.
Unlike Disneyland, this one is fully submerged in a real aquarium tank. Each rider has a screen where kids hunt for treasure, while parents can actually enjoy watching the fish swim by.
It’s calm, engaging, and surprisingly relaxing.
Extra Add-Ons to Know About
- SEA LIFE Aquarium is attached to the park and available via park hopper ticket
- In summer, the water park is an additional option
- There’s also a large splash pad inside the main park, complete with individual changing rooms and a paid body-sized blow dryer
We skipped water play — we were already soaked from the rain.
Final Verdict: Would I Recommend LEGOLAND California?
Yes — for the right family.
If you have kids ages 2–10, especially in that preschool-to-early-elementary sweet spot, LEGOLAND California is fun, manageable, and far less overwhelming than bigger theme parks.
This trip delivered:
✔️ Lots of rides without long waits
✔️ Kid joy without total parent exhaustion
✔️ A hotel that truly caters to families
And honestly? That’s a win in my book.
Less stress. More memories. ✨
