Not Every Trip Needs an Itinerary: Why This Arizona Airbnb Was the Family Vacation We Didn’t Know We Needed

Sometimes, travel means bucket-list destinations, packed schedules, and passport stamps. And sometimes… it means staying in one place, embracing the chaos of five kids under six, and watching your husband cry-laugh over Carolina Reaper cheese puffs.

A few months ago, we met up with my brother and his family for a long weekend in Gilbert, Arizona, and it turned out to be one of the most relaxing, low-pressure family-friendly Airbnb vacations we’ve ever taken.

The Crew

We were a party of 10: five adults (me, my husband, my brother, my sister-in-law, and our mom) and five very energetic children ages 6, 4, 4, 2, and 1.5. We drove in from California, and my brother’s crew flew in from Kansas. The goal? Family time, sunshine, and survival. (Kidding… mostly.)

And of course, my mom was absolutely ecstatic to have all her “babies” — grown and little — under one roof. The sound of cousin giggles, grown-up banter, and clinking coffee mugs in the morning? That’s her kind of paradise.

Bird’s-eye view of backyard fun! Slides, pool, palm trees & play zones make this a desert paradise your family won’t forget.

The Airbnb That Had EVERYTHING

We stayed in a 4-bedroom, 2-bath house less than a mile from downtown Gilbert. It felt like it was designed for families like ours:

Full over Full Bunk Room. Kid-ready bunk room with bean bags, toys, and cozy blankets for wind-down time.
  • Backyard heaven:
    • Heated fenced pool + spa (they have since added a splash pad too!)
    • Private playground with a jungle gym, airplane-shaped seesaw, and a play cottage
    • Mini putt-putt course and lawn games
    • Covered patio with a misting system (hallelujah, Arizona heat)
  • Kid-friendly interior:
    • Twin/full bunk beds (the four older cousins LOVED their “sleepover room”)
    • Pack and plays, bassinets, highchairs
    • Arcade games, a pool table, and smart TVs in every room
    • Blackout blinds 🙌
    • Full laundry room (which we definitely used)
  • Well-stocked kitchen:
    • Spices, oil, sugar, and even K-Cups provided
    • We brought extra coffee because… priorities.
Coffee options. Coffee lovers rejoice! Bright, fun mugs and all the gear for your morning brew ritual.

Feeding the Fam Without Losing Our Minds

Once we all arrived (meeting up at a local brewery for lunch, naturally), the moms and grandma made a Costco run while the kids stayed back to explore the house. We spent about $400 on groceries, which covered all meals for 3.5 days — not bad for 10 people.

  • Breakfasts were handled by the dads (shoutout to my husband and brother).
  • Lunches and dinners were mostly pre-made Costco meals, and we were not mad about it.

This setup made mealtime surprisingly low-stress and gave us more time to just… enjoy being together.

Dishes for the littles.Kid-friendly plates, cups, forks, and divided trays—colorful, cute, and stress-free for mealtime!

Why This Trip Mattered More Than Most

I’ll be honest — I was just two weeks post-op from a double mastectomy and reconstruction when we took this trip. I couldn’t help much, but being in a place that felt like home (with a high adult-to-kid ratio!) meant I could rest and recover while still being present.

My sister-in-law was also running on empty and needed a break. This trip, as simple as it was, gave all of us what we needed: quiet joy, good food, sibling laughter, and the kind of cousin playtime that builds lifelong memories.

And yes, we did stop on the drive in at the little town of Quartzsite for snacks — including those infamous Carolina Reaper cheese puffs. Watching my husband and brother go head-to-head in a spicy food challenge may have been the highlight of the entire trip.

Rack ‘em up! Our stylish billiards room is perfect for relaxing, competing, or just showing off your trick shots.

Final Thoughts: What Makes an Airbnb Truly Family-Friendly?

This trip reminded me that you don’t need excursions, theme parks, or big itineraries to have a memorable family getaway. Sometimes, it’s all about the space to breathe, play, and connect.

If you’re booking an family-friendly Airbnb with young kids, here are a few things to look for:

✅ Fenced pool
✅ Separate bedrooms or bunk beds for kids
✅ Play areas (inside and out!)
✅ Full kitchen + laundry
✅ Baby/toddler gear included
✅ Proximity to grocery stores or Costco
