An Unforgettable Multi-Generational Escape to Aulani: Our Best Family Trip Yet

Our recent Aulani family vacation, was, without a doubt, our favorite family trip to date. This wasn’t just another getaway; it was a truly magical multi-generational adventure, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. Traveling with my mom, my husband, and our two young children, this Hawaiian escape was a seamless blend of relaxation, vibrant culture, and quintessential Disney wonder.

Unlike the Disney theme parks, Aulani strikes a unique and delightful balance: we found it to be approximately 85% steeped in authentic Hawaiian culture and 15% infused with that familiar Disney magic. From the moment we arrived in Ko Olina, Oahu, we knew we’d found our perfect slice of paradise, where every detail catered to a truly unforgettable family experience.

For our group of five, the two-bedroom villa was the absolute perfect home base, offering far more than just ample space – it was a true home away from home. The kids excitedly tried a different bed almost every night, reveling in the freedom. One of the biggest game-changers was having a full laundry setup, complete with a washer and dryer, which meant we could pack significantly lighter, a huge convenience for any family traveling with little ones.

The villa also boasted a comfortable dining seating area where we could enjoy meals together, alongside a full kitchen equipped with a stove, oven, dishwasher, and refrigerator. This made preparing breakfasts and snacks incredibly easy, saving us time and money. And for our multi-generational group, the 2.5 bathrooms were a blessing – enough toilets for everyone, ensuring smooth mornings and quick transitions throughout the day!

My main goal for this trip was rest and relaxation, and Aulani delivered spectacularly. We intentionally planned no off-resort activities and didn’t even bother with a rental car, embracing the ease of resort living. It’s important to remember that Aulani isn’t an all-inclusive resort, so budgeting for food, drinks, snacks, and most activities is key. Upon landing, I placed an Instacart order, which arrived seamlessly at the hotel two hours later. Stocking up on breakfast essentials and snacks was a game-changer, making mornings incredibly convenient and helping us manage our daily food budget.

A key component of our relaxation strategy involved ensuring our four-year-old had her own engaging activities, and Aunty’s Beach House proved to be a true highlight for her. Clarissa absolutely adored Aunty’s Beach House, spending time there daily. The facility itself is incredibly secure, providing immense peace of mind for parents. Each child receives a special MagicBand upon check-in, which contains all their necessary information for both drop-off and pick-up, ensuring that only authorized individuals can collect them. Before our stay, we learned that guests could book one complimentary 90-minute session per child daily, with time slots typically at 8:00 AM-9:30 AM, 10:00 AM-11:30 AM, or 12:00 PM-1:30 PM – a fantastic free perk! It’s crucial to note that these complimentary spots fill up very fast and should be booked as soon as they become available. Clarissa also loved the energetic Kakamora Chaos experience. While this came with an extra charge, the fact that it lasted for a full three hours was a huge benefit. This gave us a much-needed longer break to enjoy a relaxed casual lunch at Off the Hook, with our two-year-old, Logan, happily staying with my mom during that time while Clarissa was fully engaged.

Beyond the structured fun of Aunty’s Beach House, Aulani offered a wealth of engaging complimentary activities that truly enriched our stay. We gathered around for one of the “Mo’olelo Fire Pit Storytelling,” a captivating 15-minute tale told by “Uncle” about the Menehune, the legendary “little people” of the island, which completely entranced the kids.

We also participated in a family craft session, creating fun bracelets and Hawaiian-inspired art that made for lovely souvenirs. Evenings brought relaxed entertainment as we unwound on the lawn, watching a movie under the stars. For those interested in the resort’s deeper connection to the islands, we highly recommend taking the property tour, which beautifully highlights the rich Hawaiian culture and art woven throughout Aulani’s design.

One of the special things about the resort is that it is has its own beach area within the Ko Olina Lagoons. This provided a wonderful and safe beach environment for the little ones, with gentle waters perfect for swimming, paddling and snorkeling. A fantastic perk that we took full advantage of is that Aulani offers complimentary sand toys for the kids to use, saving us valuable packing space!

Sweet treats were definitely a theme of our trip, with endless Dole Whip being a daily must. Speaking of which, I have to share a moment that truly highlighted the wonderful service at Aulani. Once, after bringing back a fresh Dole Whip, poor Logan dropped his on the sand. He was so upset, but the kind person at Little ‘Opihi’s saw what happened and immediately offered to replace it, saying with a warm smile that this happened all the time.

And for another sweet treat, the Mickey Mouse shaped shaved ice from Papalua Shave Ice was a huge hit. The coconut chia seed pudding from ‘Ulu Cafe was a refreshing treat on hot Hawaiian days. With all these delicious treats, the kids were, predictably, needing to use the restroom more than normal, making the abundance of conveniently located bathrooms around the pool a small but significant detail that made our days much smoother.

Beyond the lively pool scene, Aulani also offered opportunities for adult serenity and self-care. While I’m generally not a “spa-girly” and can’t truly relax when someone else is touching me, I did take the time to tour Aulani’s Laniwai Spa facility. Even for someone like me, it looked incredibly peaceful and relaxing. The tranquil atmosphere and beautiful setting were evident, and I could easily see how others would find it to be a true haven for pampering.

Beyond the spa, I even managed to squeeze in some personal wellness, enjoying a serene sunrise yoga session and a paddleboard exercise class. Aulani actually offers many free exercise classes, though it’s good to know that some activities, like certain specialized classes, are available for an additional charge. However, the real magic of relaxation for parents truly unfolded at the Waikolohe Valley pool area. With the kids joyfully splashing in the various pools and splash zones, we found genuine peace of mind knowing that the entire area was exceptionally well-staffed with attentive lifeguards. This abundance of watchful eyes allowed us parents to actually sit back, unwind, and soak up the Hawaiian sun. To elevate the experience even further, we loved being able to effortlessly order refreshing drinks and delicious food directly from the friendly pool servers who circulated constantly. This meant no interrupting playtime, no trekking to a counter, just seamless service right to our lounge chairs, making it truly feel like a resort escape where every need was anticipated.

As day turned to night, our family adventures continued, culminating in unforgettable evenings. Attending the Aulani luau was a definite highlight. We opted for the premium seating, a decision I highly recommend for families. This allowed the kids to have some extra time to enjoy the pre-show activities like poi grinding, temporary arm tattoos, and ukulele playing, without the pressure of having to line up early for a better seat. Although, it’s worth noting that the way the tables are set up, there really isn’t a “bad” seat in the house when it comes to viewing the stage! The food at the luau buffet was great as expected, with a fantastic selection of both savory dishes and delicious desserts. The performers were truly amazing, showcasing their incredible talents in beautifully recreating the story and history of the island of Oahu through song and dance.

We were incredibly fortunate to have a ground-floor villa with a garden view that faced the luau area. This prime location was an absolute lifesaver for bathroom breaks, as the kids, fueled by delicious lemonade, seemed to need to pee every 30 minutes! Being able to pop back into our room easily saved us countless long walks to the main luau bathrooms.

The character breakfast at the Makahiki Restaurant was another fantastic experience. While it’s now served plates instead of a buffet, the portions were more than generous, ensuring everyone left satisfied. A big plus about the character breakfast was, as expected, getting to meet all of the characters one-on-one without feeling rushed during the visits. It was truly special; Logan was even surprised by Stitch as he gently snuck up on him from behind!

For everyday essentials and more affordable local treats, we made daily trips across the street to the Family Market ABC Store. This isn’t just a convenience store; it’s a treasure trove that truly caters to resort guests. Inside, we found a bustling coffee bar, a tempting ice cream service counter, a handy deli, and even hot breakfasts, lunches, and dinners – perfect for grabbing a quick bite without the resort prices. And of course, it was a fantastic spot for souvenirs of all kinds. In fact, we had a mini-crisis when we realized we’d forgotten to pack Jeremy a Hawaiian shirt for the luau, and the ABC Store came to the rescue with a great selection! For our final dinner, we ventured to Monkeypod, and the food there was absolutely amazing, a perfect culinary conclusion to our trip.

Aulani truly offers everything a family could wish for, seamlessly blending Disney magic with Hawaiian culture. We can’t wait to return!
